Totem Pole
Exploring geometric shapes in Northwestern Native American Art
In this project, we were to create a totem pole. We were given a great deal of leeway as to the type of animals we used and stylistic approach. I chose to use a more conventional style based on some examples on totem poles I had seen, wanting to explore using the geometric patterns to fill the spaces. I chose the eagle because I wanted something with a wide stance, the wolf as representative of the wild, the longhorn to represent Texas where I was born, the cat with bared teeth to represent the destructiveness of one of our "domesticated" cats, and the horse represents me as I was born in the Chinese Year of the Horse, and the description fits me. I placed three of the horse heads as the base so I could show side and frontal views.
